5 Tips to Mix and Match Existing Outfits

With increasing awareness of sustainability, one of the commonly asked questions I received is 'How do I mix and match outfits from existing wardrobe?' By purchasing fewer yet higher-quality pieces, consumer can create a more conscious approach to fashion with versatility and style. Not only that, one can save a lot of time getting ready because putting together an outfit is no longer a hustle.

In this article, I will share 5 tips on how to create a sensible, comfortable yet practical outfits by mixing and matching most common items almost everyone has:

#1 Layering Basic Pieces in Neutral Colours

Normally we have white, beige, brown or black basic pieces such as shirts, pants, skirt, cardigan or dress. Say for example you prefer grey top, layer it with black blazer, mix and match with white jeans would never go wrong! If you perspire easily, matching beige t-shirt with straight cut jeans and sport shoes or kitten heels, you are good to go! If you stay or work in cooler environment, you can always layer a white cardigan over a knit dress with dark leggings and ankle boots to elongate your legs while looking trendy.

#2 Accessorizing

Accessories can completely transform an outfit. Try adding a statement necklace, scarf, cap, watch, rings or bracelets to your outfit to create a new look! One of the advices I always give to my clients is to mix and match different shoes, bags and belts to create a unique outfit as it is normally a smaller investment compared to brand new clothing. Experiment with different textures and patterns to create a unique look, not only it brings out one's personality, more return on investment (ROI) and it works for both genders!

#3 Mixing Prints

Mixing prints can be a great way to create a bold and outfit that stands out. Ladies, you can try pairing a polka dot blouse with a striped skirt or a floral dress with a plaid blazer. Make sure that the colors in the prints complement each other instead of looking like a Christmas tree. For gentleman, be creative to mix and match animal print shirt with geometry print short pants or tribal top with floral pants for a casual or party look.

#4 Creating a Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. Invest in a few high-quality pieces like a classic blazer, few prints such as stripes, checkered or plaids, and few pairs of fitting pants to allow utilizing all wardrobe items. The benefits of working with a wardrobe curator like me is that I will plan the percentage of your capsule wardrobe, says most of your time you either need to meet clients or always have to be camera ready, I will suggest you to go for 70% items that are suitable for work outfit and remaining for casual or special occasion.

#5 Experimenting with Colours

Do not worry about being colourful, it doesn't mean you will stand out! Great example for work outfit is dusty pink blouse match with emerald green skirt; of course, if you need to be on stage or get attention, choose bright fuchsia pink mermaid skirt with tight fitting chili red top. Be sure to hold on to the principal: Wearer wears the colours instead of the clothing colours overpower the wearer. Don't worry! A proper certified colour consultant will match your skin undertone with colours that help brighten up your skin, looks more energetic and less tiring! Same goes to the gentleman, if you are social influencer or needed to be camera ready, get ready with bright yellow sweater with navy jeans or if you need to look more matured yet wants to have some fun with colours, autumn red pants with grey top, make sure colours you wear complement.

In conclusion, creating a sustainable and conscious approach to fashion by mixing and matching outfits from an existing wardrobe can not only save time but also be practical, comfortable and stylish. By investing in high-quality basic pieces in neutral colors, accessorizing with statement pieces, experimenting with mixing prints and colors, and creating a capsule wardrobe, one can create a versatile wardrobe that works for both casual and formal occasions. With the help of a wardrobe curator or certified color consultant, one can achieve a more personalized and unique style that reflects their personality and skin undertone. Ultimately, the key is to make the most out of what we already have and be creative in combining different elements to create a new and refreshing look.
